Crios de Susana Balbo Rosé of Malbec 2010

Crios de Susana Balbo Rose of Malbec 2010This is hands down one of my favorite Rosés.  I had it couple of years ago at a tasting, bought a bottle, then for some reason couldn’t find it again. Which made me very sad.

Then one recent Sunday, I’m ambling around World Market looking for a wine to buy. Since most actual wine stores aren’t open on Sunday here in our charming little town, World Market seems to be my wine retailer of choice if I’m shopping for wine on that day. On this particular Sunday, I saw this wine and nearly wept with joy. Yes folks, it moved me that much. That’s because as a lover of good Rosé, I know how very challenging it can be to find one I like if it’s Sunday and I don’t have access to a true wine retailer.

(On a side note, I noticed a few days later that Harriss Teeter actually carries it too. Score! Because let me tell you, even though Harriss Teeter has a decent wine selection, if you find yourself in the position of absolutely having to shop for wine there, they do NOT have a good selection of Rosé. Their Rosé selection is actually quite pitiful.)

My impressions:  Flavors of strawberry and spice, with good fruit and a nice, loooooong finish. Because it’s made with Malbec grapes, there’s some there, there. Meaning, this wine has some body to it. It will set you back about $12. Twist-off cap. Alcohol, 13.5 %. Would pair nicely with both white wine and red wine foods, so it would be good to have on hand for a large gathering with lots of food choices, or when you’re serving dinner to both red and white wine drinkers.

Notes from elsewhere around the web:

Winemaker’s Notes:

“A beautiful, deep, vibrant rosé color. Has a surprising amount of body for a rosé wine, and beautiful aromas of fresh, ripe wild strawberries. On the palate, the flavors of strawberries and young cherries come rushing in, accompanied by some spice notes and a clean, dry finish. This is the perfect chicken wine and a charming companion to mildly spicy Asian cuisine. Keep one in the fridge at all times and you’ll always have a delicious wine to enjoy with light snacks and cheeses. Best consumed in its youth.”

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar:

“Pale red. Strawberry on the nose, lifted by a citrus element. Supple and moderately sweet, with a plump texture but attractive sugar/acid balance to the dominant strawberry flavor. Easygoing, seamless rose with very good fruit, made via the saignee method.”

Cheers!

Excellent review! I liked this rosé, but I know that there are better ones out there from Argentina. Have you been able to find any other Argentine roses?

I also reviewed this wine on my Argentine wine and culture blog, if you get a chance, check it out here:

I look forward to checking in on your blog from time to time.

    Salud!
