Nicola’s: Get Your Fresh Hot Pasta Here!

Kimberly Houston | November 30, 2009

Tonight I went to Nicola’s with my Wilmington Foodies group, and ate pasta, pasta, pasta!  There were 5 courses, Nicola style:
Manicotti:  homemade crepes filled with ricotta, mozzarella and Romano cheese, lightly sauced, then baked
Bucatini:  like spaghetti, but thicker, and hollow inside, with shrimp, chopped tomatoes and asparagus, in garlic white wine sauce
Penne:  with smoked salmon, [...]

Out Loud and Proud: My Thanksgiving 2009 Gratitude List

Kimberly Houston | November 28, 2009

This is the kind of post I would normally just never do, being so private and, well, even closed off, some would say, but since I’ve often mentioned on this blog how useful it is to get out of your comfort zone from time to time, here goes:  a short post to give thanks for [...]

Thanksgiving Wine Pairing Made Simple

Kimberly Houston | November 23, 2009

eally, all you need to know for successfully pairing wine with your Thanksgiving meal is this:  drink what you like.  If you do that and don’t stress about finding the “perfect” wine that perfectly complements the main course, all the sides, AND dessert (doesn’t exist), you’ll be fine.
But here’s some general info to help you [...]

Unserious Wine for Unserious Times: Beaujolais Nouveau 2009

Kimberly Houston | November 22, 2009

OK, it’s that time of year, the third Thursday of November and all that.  And we all know what that means — the new Beaujolais Nouveau.  (Which is like saying, “the new new Beaujolais.” OK. Anyway.) Last week marked the arrival of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau, and the “experts” are saying this years is a [...]

Who Else Wants to Cook Easy, Elegant Meals?

Kimberly Houston | November 21, 2009

Once upon a time, I lived on what felt like an isolated island.  I was working on a political campaign in Brunswick County, NC (another life), and my residence for that time was a charming little house on Oak Island, a few steps from the beach.  Perfectly wonderful.  Except, I didn’t really know another soul [...]

Good Wine Reads

Kimberly Houston | November 18, 2009

If you want some ideas for a few good wine books to read (or give as gifts, yeah!), check out Eric Asimov’s blog, The Pour, from November 17, 2009.  I have his blog saved to my favorites, though I seldom remember to read it.  But I do always make sure to read the online version of [...]

Food and Wine Pairing: Farfalle with Chicken, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Spinach & Goat Cheese, and Alfredo Roca Pinot Noir 2008

Kimberly Houston | November 13, 2009

I consider this a recipe “fail.” What happened was this:  I was all set to make Farfalle with Chicken, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Spinich and Goat Cheese — because there is something magical and oh-so-delicious about the combination goat cheese, tomatoes and spinach — but when I opened the jar of sun-dried tomatoes that I’d used on [...]

It’s Almost Thanksgiving, What Are We Going to Drink?

Kimberly Houston | November 12, 2009

If you want to get started thinking about your Thanksgiving meal wines, here’s a great piece from yesterday’s New York Times Dining & Wine section that will help you get going in the right direction.  I especially love the suggestion about buying a case of white and a case of red, if you are feeding a [...]

A Great Wine at a Great Price: Delas St. Esprit Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge 2007

Kimberly Houston | November 10, 2009

I don’t know why I don’t take the wine at World Market more seriously.  When I’m wandering around in there, I’ll often see a highly rated wine for a really good price, and usually just walk on by.  I guess I have it in my head that I can find much better stuff on my [...]

Food Bloggers versus “Real” Cooks: The Smackdown

Kimberly Houston | November 8, 2009

It started innocently enough.  I was reading the November issue of Gourmet magazine, when I came across a fascinating little item about cinnamon — did you know that when you go to the spice aisle in your local supermarket and buy  ground cinnamon, such as  McCormick’s and the like, it’s not “real” cinnamon?  Yeah, right, [...]
